Background of the Study
Nursing workload has been a persistent issue in healthcare settings worldwide, influencing the quality of care provided to patients (Sulaiman et al., 2023). The nursing profession, by nature, involves high levels of responsibility, requiring nurses to balance patient care with administrative duties, all while facing physical and emotional demands (Chukwu et al., 2023). Workload is often defined as the number of tasks or patients assigned to a nurse, alongside the time constraints in which these tasks must be completed (Ali et al., 2023). In environments like Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, where hospitals frequently face overcrowding and staffing shortages, the workload of nurses can escalate, leading to compromised care quality and increased stress among healthcare providers (Jibril & Abdullahi, 2024).
In FMC Katsina, which serves as a major referral hospital in Northern Nigeria, nurses are often tasked with caring for an increasing number of patients while dealing with insufficient resources. This scenario is not unusual in many public healthcare institutions in developing countries (Usman et al., 2024). Research suggests that when nurses are overburdened with excessive workloads, their ability to provide optimal care deteriorates, as they have less time to devote to each patient, potentially leading to medical errors, patient dissatisfaction, and burnout (Suleiman et al., 2025). Additionally, heavy workloads can hinder nurses' ability to form strong therapeutic relationships with patients, which is crucial for improving care quality (Afolabi & Sadiq, 2023).
The link between workload and care quality has been the subject of numerous studies globally, yet there is limited research on this relationship in the context of Nigerian hospitals, particularly FMC Katsina. Understanding the implications of workload on nursing care quality is crucial for developing strategies to alleviate stress, improve job satisfaction among nurses, and enhance patient outcomes (Umar & Yusuf, 2023). This study aims to explore how workload impacts the quality of nursing care in this hospital and provide recommendations to improve both nurse well-being and patient care.
Statement of the Problem
At FMC Katsina, nurses are increasingly faced with high patient-to-nurse ratios, long shifts, and insufficient resources. These conditions are contributing to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and a decline in the quality of nursing care (Aliyu et al., 2023). Previous studies have suggested that such workload-related stress negatively affects clinical decision-making, reduces the time available for patient education, and impedes the establishment of strong nurse-patient relationships (Bello et al., 2023). Despite this, the specific impact of workload on the quality of nursing care at FMC Katsina has not been comprehensively studied, creating a gap in the understanding of how workload factors influence care delivery in this setting. The absence of such evidence hinders the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the negative effects of nurse workload on patient outcomes.
The lack of sufficient research into this issue makes it difficult for hospital administrators and policymakers to develop effective strategies that could improve care quality by addressing workload-related challenges (Hassan et al., 2024). A better understanding of the relationship between workload and care quality is necessary to improve the nursing work environment and ensure that patients receive high-quality care in FMC Katsina.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the relationship between nursing workload and the quality of nursing care in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina.
2. To evaluate the impact of workload on the job satisfaction of nurses at FMC Katsina.
3. To identify strategies to reduce workload and improve the quality of care provided by nurses at FMC Katsina.
Research Questions
1. What is the relationship between nursing workload and the quality of nursing care in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina?
2. How does workload affect job satisfaction among nurses at FMC Katsina?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce workload and enhance the quality of nursing care at FMC Katsina?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant negative relationship between nursing workload and the quality of nursing care in FMC Katsina.
2. Increased workload is associated with lower job satisfaction among nurses at FMC Katsina.
3. Implementing workload reduction strategies will improve the quality of nursing care at FMC Katsina.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nurses working at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, across various wards, including medical, surgical, and emergency units. The study will examine the relationship between workload and nursing care quality through surveys and interviews with nursing staff. Limitations include the potential for response bias in self-reported data, the cross-sectional nature of the research, and the limited scope of the study, which may not be generalizable to other healthcare settings in Nigeria.
